OpenAI launches Critterz, an AI-driven animated film aimed at Hollywood executives

OpenAI Bets on AI-Generated Feature Film to Transform Hollywood

OpenAI is intensifying its efforts to persuade Hollywood that generative artificial intelligence is a viable tool for filmmaking by supporting an animated feature film designed to compete with more expensive productions, reports 24brussels.

This film, titled Critterz, is projected to be released globally in 2026 after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. The project will primarily utilize OpenAI’s AI tools, including the much-debated GPT-5 model, which recently faced scrutiny following its lackluster launch.

With a production budget of less than $30 million and a tight timeline of just nine months, Critterz represents a fraction of the typical funding needed for animated features. OpenAI, in collaboration with partners from Los Angeles and London, Native Foreign and Vertigo Films, aims to use this project to sway hesitant Hollywood executives amidst an industry still grappling with the rapid adoption of AI. Significant concerns linger regarding intellectual property rights, creative control, and the overall acceptance of AI-generated content among talent and audiences alike.

As Hollywood wrestles with these challenges, the stakes are high for OpenAI and its partners to demonstrate that a budget-friendly, AI-driven production can hold its ground against traditional animation methods, ultimately shifting perceptions within the film industry.
