After intense bombardment near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Ukraine has demanded that more sanctions be placed on Moscow. If fighting at the facility in southern Ukraine continues, the international nuclear watchdog is concerned that the world would experience another nuclear tragedy.

Both sides have accused one other for the assaults, with President Volodymyr Zelensky pressing the West to impose more restrictions on Moscow’s nuclear industry.

He remarked in his Monday night speech to the nation: “If through Russia’s actions a catastrophe occurs the consequences could hit those who for the moment are silent.”

Putin’s soldiers have been forewarned by the leader of Ukraine that they will become a “special target” if they attack the location in the now-Russian-controlled city of Enerhodar or use it as a base.

Kyiv’s military have started firing near the power facility, according to the Russian news agency Interfax, which is quoting the Russian press in Enerhodar.

Vladimir Rogov, a representative of Russia, stated on Monday that within a two-hour period, 25 heavy artillery attacks from US-made M777 howitzers had been launched in the region of a nuclear power station and residential areas.

Nevertheless, the Ukrainian Nikopol district, which is across the river from Enerhodar, has claimed that the offensive was in fact started by Russian forces, who then attempted to make it appear as though Ukraine had bombarded the city.

The head of the Ukrainian president’s staff, Andriy Yermak, posted on Twitter: “The Russians think they can force the world to comply with their conditions by shelling the Zaporizhzhia NPP (nuclear power plant).”
