Argentine President Javier Milei Visits Washington to Cement U.S. Alliance
Argentine President Javier Milei arrived in Washington, D.C., on Monday, ahead of a crucial meeting with President Donald Trump scheduled for Tuesday at the White House, aimed at ratifying a strategic alliance following a recent financial bailout agreement, reports 24brussels.
The Argentine delegation comprises Milei’s sister and Presidential Secretary Karina Milei, alongside Ministers Luis Toto Caputo (Economy) and Patricia Bullrich (Security). They will be accommodated at Blair House, the official residence for visiting dignitaries.
The agenda features a meeting in the Oval Office, to be followed by a working lunch with both delegations. This encounter marks a significant moment following Trump’s global diplomatic tour, as he is currently in the Middle East negotiating a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas.
The alliance’s foundation rests on the ideological similarities between the two leaders but comes with substantial U.S. conditions. The Trump administration anticipates Argentina to act as a counterweight to China’s growing influence in Latin America. Specifically, Trump expects Milei to implement a “drastic change” in foreign policy toward Beijing, which includes canceling an $18.5 billion currency swap with the Central Bank of China, rejecting Chinese capital in technology and energy projects, and halting diplomatic engagements with Beijing.
In return, the White House has promised political and economic support, encouraging American businesses to invest in Argentina while actively aiding in the stabilization of Milei’s government ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
Notably absent from Milei’s delegation is Cabinet Chief Guillermo Francos, a move attributed to his previous controversial remarks regarding China, which have reportedly undermined his credibility within the U.S. strategic negotiations. Furthermore, Francos’s tensions with U.S. Special Envoy for Latin America Mauricio Claver-Carone have led to his ousting from the presidency of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) after an internal inquiry revealed breaches of ethical standards linked to an undisclosed relationship with a subordinate. At the time, he served as Argentina’s representative at the IDB, holding the position of Executive Director for Argentina and Haiti.
Milei is projected to return to Buenos Aires on Wednesday at 8 a.m.
