“Seek to de-risk international economy by forging strong partnerships…” Jaishankar as India-Canada prepare roadmap to advance ties
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand on October 13, 2025, during her inaugural official visit to India. Jaishankar emphasized the need for New Delhi and Ottawa to enhance their relationship comprehensively to de-risk the international economy and foster bilateral cooperation, reports 24brussels.
In the discussions, Jaishankar stated, “We seek to de-risk the international economy today by forging strong partnerships of growing range and depth. Your visit, Ms. Anand, affords an opportunity to review the global scenario and exchange perspectives.” He highlighted the long-standing tradition of India and Canada as proactive participants in global affairs, noting their membership in the G20 and the Commonwealth.
Jaishankar pointed out significant convergences between India and Canada in the Indo-Pacific region, expressing shared support for effective multilateralism, climate action, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Agenda 2030. He revealed that both nations have outlined a comprehensive plan to bolster cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, and technology.
Addressing the media following their talks, Jaishankar remarked on the positive trajectory of India-Canada relations in recent months, committing to restore and enhance mechanisms vital for advancing their partnership. His comments underscored a series of high-level interactions, including recent meetings between national security advisors, trade ministers, and senior officials from both foreign ministries.
The meeting between Jaishankar and Anand coincides with a period of improving diplomatic relations and a mutual initiative to rebuild trust after previous tensions. Jaishankar referenced Prime Minister Modi’s remarks from his June meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Carney, indicating India’s determination to approach the relationship with a constructive outlook.
He also noted the significance of the recent appointments of High Commissioners in both countries, highlighting their role in ensuring diplomatic continuity. “Our responsibility as Foreign Ministers is to shepherd the process of rebuilding our cooperation and to ensure that it delivers on the expectations of our Prime Ministers and the interests of our people,” Jaishankar added.
Moreover, Jaishankar emphasized the shared values and geopolitical alignment between the two democracies. “When we look at Canada, we see a complementary economy, another open society, and a partner that shares India’s values of diversity and pluralism,” he stated. His remarks reflect a commitment to using Anand’s visit as a pivotal moment to assess the shifting global landscape and cultivate a forward-looking agenda for India-Canada relations.
