Iran and Allies Present Draft Resolution at IAEA Amid Ongoing Tensions
On September 16, 2025, Iran and five allied nations submitted a draft resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calling for a ban on attacks or threats against nuclear facilities under safeguards. This resolution comes in the wake of U.S. and Israeli bombings of Iranian nuclear sites during the June 12-Days War, which led to civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure, reports 24brussels.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismaeil Baghaei announced the draft on the social media platform X, stating that China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Belarus collaborated in its formulation. “To defend the integrity of the NPT, Iran along with China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus have submitted a draft resolution on ‘Prohibition of all forms of attack and threats of attack against nuclear sites and facilities under IAEA safeguards,’” he wrote.
The draft resolution was introduced during the IAEA General Conference, which commenced on Monday in Vienna. Baghaei emphasized that the measure seeks to uphold “the integrity of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT),” reiterating that all nations possess an inalienable right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and deserve effective protection against any aggression.
During the conference, Mohamed Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, vocally criticized the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, labeling them violations of international law. He condemned the IAEA’s inaction regarding these attacks and denounced the silence of the UN Security Council, suggesting that this lack of response stemmed from pressure exerted by Washington.
The diplomatic initiatives reflect ongoing tensions in the region and raise questions about international regulations governing nuclear energy. As Iran continues to face military threats, the call for enhanced protection of nuclear facilities signifies its commitment to sustaining its nuclear program while seeking international acknowledgment of its rights under the NPT framework.
