Cleanup begins in Merelbeke-Melle following fire that destroyed two warehouses

Merelbeke-Melle – Cleanup operations are underway in Merelbeke-Melle following a devastating fire on August 6, 2025, which destroyed two warehouses of the Servietto packaging company and a nearby meat trader’s facility, reports 24brussels.

In the aftermath of the incident, workers have begun clearing debris, conducting hazard assessments, and sorting materials for safe disposal. The fire has heavily impacted the area, leading to significant structural damage and extensive waste.

Local officials, including Mayor Egbert Lachaert, are overseeing the cleanup process closely and coordinating with safety and environmental experts to ensure effective management of the situation. Due to the scale of the destruction, the cleanup is anticipated to be a lengthy and meticulous task.

“The insurance companies involved first had to reach an agreement and then decide which cleanup company they would work with,”

Mayor Lachaert noted, underlining the complexities of initiating the cleanup operation.

Who’s leading the cleanup after the Merelbeke-Melle fire?

According to the mayor, the extent of debris complicates the cleanup process, intensifying the urgency for a swift operation. “As a municipality, we have already urged them to start as quickly as possible,” Lachaert remarked.

“It is good for residents that the cleanup has finally begun,”

He emphasized that many local gardens still retain remnants of the fire, including fragments of debris and damaged structures that require immediate attention.

On the day of the blaze, a major fire erupted at the Servietto facility in East Flanders, leading to destruction that has left behind a dangerous landscape littered with wreckage. However, authorities have confirmed that no asbestos-containing materials have reached the gardens of nearby homes, alleviating some concerns among local residents.
