UK and US Forge Multi-Billion Dollar Technology Partnership
On September 17, 2025, the United Kingdom and the United States solidified a multi-billion-dollar technology deal during U.S. President Donald Trump’s state visit, aiming to enhance sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and nuclear technology, reports 24brussels.
The Tech Prosperity Deal is designed to accelerate AI research for developing new drugs, streamlining treatments, and improving cancer care, while also bolstering civil nuclear projects.
As part of this initiative, Microsoft intends to invest $30 billion in AI infrastructure within the UK. Concurrently, Google plans to establish a data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, as integral to a two-year, multi-billion-dollar investment strategy in the country.
However, critics have raised alarms about the UK’s mounting reliance on the US and its technology, highlighting potential risks associated with such dependence. Gaia Marcus of the Ada Lovelace Institute remarked that the focus should not solely be on immediate financial gains, as this might lead to “technological lock-in” which could restrict future options.
Additionally, Chi Onwurah, chair of the House of Commons Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, warned that genuine technological sovereignty cannot hinge on dependency on a single investor or nation.
Trump’s arrival in London was met with considerable dissent, as nearly 100 protesters gathered outside Windsor Castle, voicing their objections to the visit. Slogans like “Stop Hate, Stop Trump” were chanted, and placards bore messages stating, “Hate Never Made Any Nation Great.” Organized by the Stop Trump Coalition, tens of thousands are expected to protest across London on Wednesday.
