Hoeselt and Bilzen fire brigades merge into new station with 82 firefighters and 35 ambulance staff

Bilzen-Hoeselt – The fire brigades of Hoeselt and Bilzen have merged into a unified base in Bilzen, comprising 82 firefighters and 35 ambulance personnel, reports 24brussels.

As reported by VRT News, the new shared facility, located on Linnerbocht in Limburg province, replaces the two previously independent posts. This consolidation aims to enhance operational efficiency and ensure better coordination among the teams.

The merger integrates both fire brigades and their resources into a single location, with Chief of Police Jos Peters highlighting that the new setup fosters stronger collaboration. “This move brings more efficiency and stronger coordination,” Peters stated.

What will the new Hoeselt and Bilzen fire station with 82 firefighters and 35 staff mean for the community?

The inauguration of the new fire station was celebrated with a parade featuring fire trucks through the local streets, drawing large crowds. “There were huge crowds lining the road,” said Peters. “The brass band even played a serenade. It’s wonderful to see how much the merger of our stations is appreciated.”

According to Chief Peters, the new facility has been designed with a focus on sustainability. The building is energy-neutral and is equipped with solar panels that generate power for everyday operations and the uninterruptible power system.

The public will have the opportunity to explore the new barracks later this month, with open days scheduled for September 27 and 28, 2025, allowing residents to inspect the facilities.

The councils of Hoeselt and Bilzen approved the merger on June 28, 2021. This decision unified the two municipalities under a single administration, now known as Bilzen-Hoeselt, which officially took effect on January 1, 2025. Local elections were held on October 13, 2024, to establish the new council. The merged municipality covers approximately 106 square kilometers and is home to around 42,000 residents.
