Belgium Revokes Refugee Status of Pro-Palestinian Activist Mohammed Khatib

The Belgian Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGRS) has revoked the refugee status of Mohammed Khatib, the European coordinator of the controversial pro-Palestinian organisation Samidoun. The Palestinian, who has resided in Belgium since 2015, plans to appeal the CGRS decision, reports 24brussels.

Belgian authorities cite Khatib’s involvement in Samidoun, which claims to support Palestinian prisoners, as the basis for their decision. The newspaper Le Soir reported that Khatib is recognized by the Belgian Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (CUTA) as a “hate preacher.” This follows an earlier request by the Immigration Office (IO) to rescind his refugee status in 2022.

The Belgian government categorizes Samidoun as an extremist organization. Prior to the summer recess, the government advanced a draft law initiated by Interior Minister Bernard Quintin aimed at outlawing radical organizations within its borders. Prime Minister Bart De Wever asserted that “organizations such as Samidoun glorify terrorist organizations and atrocities while avoiding detection for incitement of hatred.”

Since the onset of the Israel-Gaza conflict, Samidoun has come under increased scrutiny. Jewish organizations have repeatedly raised alarms regarding its operations. Recently, in November 2023, Germany officially banned Samidoun for disseminating anti-Semitic rhetoric and praising terrorist entities, including Hamas.

While Khatib prepares to challenge the decision, the implications of the Belgian government’s actions highlight a significant conflict between national security concerns and the rights of activists operating within Europe, revealing the dynamics of the ongoing Israel-Palestine discourse.

For now, the case of Khatib adds pressure on Belgium to navigate the complexities of activism and national policy carefully, while also addressing rising tensions regarding extremism in Europe.
