Nearly two weeks ago, the news broke that the Fulton County special grand jury investigating Donald Trump had completed its work. This meant that, depending on the availability of a regular grand jury to bring the indictments, Donald Trump could be just weeks away from being criminally charged in Georgia. Around that same time, a major news outlet reported that DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith was also likely just weeks away from bringing indictments in his criminal investigation into Donald Trump.

If you do the math, we could now be just days away from Donald Trump being criminally indicted on the federal and/or local level. Yet when it comes to the political narratives being kicked around by the mainstream media and pundit class right now, you’d think that these Trump criminal probes didn’t even exist.

On the one hand, it’s a reminder of just how irrelevant Donald Trump has become to the political process. Even months after his official campaign announcement, no one really believes he’s going to be a 2024 presidential candidate. But when you think back to the endless daily media hype we saw throughout last year about how “Trump 2024” was going to be this huge thing, it’s almost stunning that the media has so little to say about the fact that Trump is weeks or potentially days away from criminal indictment.

So what happens when Trump is indicted? Will the media cover it for 48 hours and then just ignore it? Will the media downplay the indictment as if it were some mere slap on the wrist, so it can keep its options open as far as trying to milk the “Trump 2024” narrative for ratings while Trump is awaiting trial? But if so, why isn’t the media even bothering to try to milk “Trump 2024” for ratings now?

On the one hand it’s understandable that, with no major news out of either Trump criminal case in nearly two weeks, the media doesn’t want to have to keep rehashing the same known facts of these cases on a daily basis with no new information. Yet the media seems to have no problem spending every day hyping the supposedly imminent debt default, even though that’s not something that can even possibly happen until June.

And that’s the catch. When the media is hyping a story that isn’t even going to be a real thing, such as the debt default, it can just make up whatever it wants. Once the debt default story goes away quietly after months of brinksmanship, none of the nonsense the media is making up about it now will ever be scrutinized. But when the media is dealing with a story that’s very real, such as Trump’s upcoming criminal indictment, it can’t just make things up, because this is a real story that will actually come out.

So here we are with almost no mainstream media coverage of the fact that the most recent former President of the United States (and supposed current presidential candidate) is about to be indicted on charges along the lines of election fraud and espionage. And the reason why it’s getting so little coverage is because it’s an important and very real storyline, which makes it difficult for the media to get away with dishonestly hyping it. Something about the entire political news media model desperately needs to change.
