Person suspected of shooting two national guard troops near White House identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal
The suspected gunman in the shooting of two national guard members on Wednesday near the White House has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan man, according to law enforcement officials.
Lakanwal is said to have entered the United States in September 2021, and been living in Washington state, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press and other outlets.

Location: The shooting occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET near the Farragut West Metro station, just a couple of blocks from the White House.
Victims: The two victims are members of the West Virginia National Guard who were in D.C. as part of a federal deployment related to crime prevention efforts. Both remain in critical condition in separate hospitals.
Incident Details: A lone gunman reportedly came around a corner, raised a firearm, and opened fire on the Guardsmen, who were on high-visibility patrol. At least one Guard member or law enforcement officer returned fire, injuring the suspect.
