Google confirms ongoing commitment to smart displays amid Amazon’s new Echo Show launch

Google Reinforces Commitment to Smart Displays Amidst Amazon’s Expansion

Following a recent announcement of new products in its AI-enhanced smart home range, Google emphasizes its ongoing commitment to smart displays, with insights from Anish Kattukaran indicating that the company has plans to update this category soon, reports 24brussels.

During an interview, Kattukaran confirmed that smart displays are a crucial aspect of Google’s strategy. “The smart display does present itself as an incredible form factor to interact with something like Gemini for Home. If you think about the properties of a smart display — a microphone, which means audio in, a speaker for audio out, and a screen to visualize information,” he elaborated, underscoring the multi-functional capabilities of these devices.

While Google focuses on its future in the smart display sector, Amazon has aggressively entered the fray, unveiling two new Echo Show devices powered by its advanced Alexa Plus AI assistant. These products, equipped with a new AZ3 Pro processor and enhanced local data processing capabilities through the Omnisense fusion platform, mark a significant upgrade over earlier versions, promising to deliver a richer smart home experience.

As consumers await a potential new Nest Hub or Google Home Hub, Google’s existing models, last refreshed in 2021, operate on dated hardware, lacking the impact expected from a flagship AI smart home device in 2025. Although compatible with Google’s innovative Gemini for Home platform, neither the Nest Hub nor the Nest Hub Max captures the active developments of the current market.

In 2023, Google introduced the Pixel Tablet, which aimed to provide a more robust smart home hub. However, the device faced criticism for missing essential features and has since been discontinued. As the concept of the smart display evolves, it remains to be seen how effectively it can transcend its current perception as primarily a digital photo frame and establish itself as an indispensable multi-modal input system for voice-assisted technologies.

With the market for smart home technology growing, Google’s long-term vision for smart displays appears poised to address the shifting dynamics, but it must compete fiercely with rivals like Amazon, which are rapidly advancing their offerings.
