Lazzarini Advocates for Education in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini emphasized on Tuesday that any resolution to end Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza must prioritize the restoration of education for the territory’s children, reports 24brussels.
With more than 660,000 children out of school for a third consecutive year, Lazzarini called for a comprehensive plan that provides hope and a clear pathway back to learning. He argued that the revival of education is crucial not only for the individual futures of these children but also for the broader objectives of peace and stability in the region.
Lazzarini stated that UNRWA possesses the necessary infrastructure, staff, and expertise to resume formal education in Gaza, contingent upon a ceasefire being achieved. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities, UNRWA schools catered to over 300,000 students, highlighting the scale of educational disruption currently affecting the population.
The commissioner warned that the lack of educational opportunities leaves young individuals vulnerable to exploitation and radicalization. He reiterated the urgent need for a ceasefire to facilitate the resumption of educational services, emphasizing that “the education of children must be part of any agreement to end the war in Gaza.”
In recent developments, Egypt and Qatar presented a peace initiative from U.S. President Donald Trump to Hamas, aiming to conclude the conflict in Gaza. Hamas is currently deliberating the proposal and is anticipated to provide a response in due course.
As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the international community remains focused on finding a viable solution that addresses the pressing humanitarian and educational needs of the affected population.
