US Military #Intelligence will be provided to #Ukraine on targets inside #Russia
This marks a significant shift in U.S. policy under the Trump administration, which had previously imposed limitations on Ukraine’s access to advanced weaponry and intelligence for deep strikes inside Russian territory. As of early October 2025, the U.S. has authorized American intelligence agencies to provide Ukraine with targeting information for long-range missile strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure
Key details of the policy shift:
Targeting Russian energy infrastructure: U.S. intelligence will help Ukraine target oil refineries, pipelines, power plants, and other energy assets to disrupt Russian revenue streams that fund the war.
Encouraging NATO allies: Washington is asking NATO allies to provide similar intelligence support to Ukraine.
Change in Trump administration stance: The move follows a period of inconsistent signals from the Trump administration, which had previously cut intelligence-sharing with Ukraine in March 2025 as part of peace talks. President Trump has recently expressed frustration with Russia’s lack of progress toward a ceasefire.
Considering additional weapons: The U.S. is also weighing a Ukrainian request for more powerful, long-range weapons capable of hitting deeper into Russia, including Tomahawk and Barracuda cruise missiles.
Kremlin reaction: Russia has responded by stating that the U.S. and NATO have been supplying intelligence to Ukraine for some time and that it will not change the situation on the battlefield.

#Zelenskyy meets European leaders: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in #Denmark for a summit with European leaders to discuss the response to #Russia‘s invasion.
The gathering follows recent airspace incursions by drones across Europe, and the response to Russia’s aggression is a major focus. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is attending the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2025, to rally support for Ukraine against Russia’s ongoing invasion
Summit details and key issues
European solidarity: Approximately 50 European leaders are participating in the summit. The host, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, has called the airspace incursions part of a “hybrid war” waged by Russia. She stated that supporting Ukraine is an “investment in the defense of Europe”.
Security measures: The summit is under tight security, with a radar system installed at Copenhagen’s airport and Danish warships patrolling offshore. Some leaders are also arguing for caution in responding to Russian provocations.
Increased drone activity: Recent drone incidents have caused disruptions at airports and military bases in Denmark, while Russian drones have also violated the airspace of other European countries, including Poland and Estonia. In response, Zelenskyy has proposed a “Drone Wall”—a joint, integrated air defense system—and stated that Ukrainian specialists and technology are available for the effort.
Shift in U.S. support: Zelenskyy’s visit also seeks to secure additional European funding, as the United States shifts its focus and reduces financial aid to Ukraine. A meeting between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump was recently described as “productive,” with discussions about providing long-range weapons systems to Ukraine.
Addressing Hungary: During his address, Zelenskyy directly called out Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán over Hungary’s energy policy with Russia. Zelenskyy urged European leaders to support stronger sanctions against Russia and to stop purchasing Russian oil, highlighting Hungary’s short-sightedness in going against the U.S. position.
Frozen Russian assets: EU leaders have recently discussed using frozen Russian assets to fund a new €140 billion ($164bn) loan for Kyiv, a topic relevant to the discussions in Copenhagen.

- Russian soldiers are increasingly using unjammable fiber-optic drones to ambush Ukrainian vehicles.
- Ukrainian soldiers who described the tactic said Russian pilots are targeting key logistics roads.
- The style of attack resembles the roadside IEDs that US forces faced in the Middle East.
Russian drones are increasingly lying in wait along Ukraine’s roads and ambushing military vehicles as they pass, turning routes that used to be relatively safe into kill zones.
Ukrainian military officers who talked to Business Insider about this tactic said Russian pilots are targeting key logistics roads near the front lines with fiber-optic drones immune to electronic warfare countermeasures, making the deadly weapons extremely difficult to stop. They said the attacks are interfering with the movement of troops and supplies.
This style of attack is similar to the roadside improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, that US and partner forces often faced in the Middle East; however, in Ukraine, the Russian drones can fly and hunt down their targets. It underscores one of the many jarring ways that uncrewed systems are raising the threat on the battlefield.
Artem, an officer in Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps who requested to be identified only by his first name for security reasons, said that Russia has increasingly been flying fiber-optic drones to logistics routes, landing them on the side of the road, waiting until an armored vehicle passes by, and then staging an ambush.
He said that these attacks happen weekly and have resulted in the loss of both soldiers and vehicles.
Fiber-optic drones are cheap, first-person-view (FPV) drones that can cost as little as just a few hundred dollars and be equipped with a small explosive payload of a few pounds.

Unlike normal FPV drones, which are controlled by radio frequency signals, fiber-optic drones are connected to their operators by long, thin cables that preserve the connection and allow the drone to resist electronic warfare and jamming tactics. For this reason, they are especially dangerous on the battlefield.
Fiber-optic drones tend to have a more limited range than the traditional radio-controlled FPV drones because of their cables and the challenges of navigating the terrain. But they can still get across the front lines and into Ukrainian territory for an ambush.
Artem, a former deputy commander in Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade and the current head of military partnerships at the independent Snake Island Institute, said that the roads once felt relatively safe, but ambush tactics have become a serious problem.
Treacherous driving conditions have affected troop movements, even forcing troops to stay in one place for longer instead of rotating to new sites as they normally would.
Drones have emerged as the predominant threat to armored vehicles — like tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, or armored personnel carriers — in Ukraine. Many vehicles are now equipped with additional protective armor and electronic warfare technology in an effort to blunt attacks.
However, fiber-optic drones aren’t affected by electronic warfare tactics. Physical barriers are one of the few effective defenses against them.

Recognizing this, Ukrainian troops have covered many key roads near the front lines with jury-rigged netting, transforming the routes into open-air tunnels to keep drones out and increase the chances of survival for vehicles. But this protection only reduces the risk; it doesn’t eliminate it entirely.
Alex Eine, section commander for a drone unit with Ukraine’s Separate Presidential Brigade, previously told Business Insider that Russian pilots are able to navigate drones through gaps in the netting and land them on the side of the road. There, they wait to strike.
Eine said he’s seen some Ukrainian vehicles destroyed in the drone ambushes.
The increasing vulnerability of combat vehicles to drones has raised questions about their relevance and effectiveness in a future conflict where uncrewed and autonomous systems would play an even greater role than they do on today’s battlefields.
Ukraine has become a death trap for armored vehicles, with thousands of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, or armored personnel carriers, lost on both sides, according to open-source intelligence estimates.
Despite the losses, many of which are caused by drones, Artem said armored vehicles are still very much relevant in combat, explaining that it is nearly impossible to carry out offensive operations without them.

The Trump Administration is facing mounting criticism over a sweeping directive that expands the government’s definition of domestic terrorism indicators to include certain political beliefs, with lawmakers and civil liberties groups warning it could be used to criminalize dissent.
The order, which directs the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) to investigate “networks, entities, and organizations that foment political violence,” identifies ideological markers such as anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism and anti-Christianity as potential red flags. Rights groups say that language is so broad it risks sweeping in protest movements, advocacy organizations, and critics of the administration.

“The goal is to silence people and groups by threatening retaliation,” Rep. Ro Khanna of California told TIME. “These are McCarthy-era tactics. The rise in political violence is real, but attacking free speech is not the answer.”
The White House has rejected claims that the order targets free speech.
“As someone who actually knows what it’s like to be censored, President Trump is a strong supporter of free speech and Democrat allegations to the contrary are so false, they’re laughable,” spokesperson Abigail Jackson told TIME.
“The Trump Administration will get to the bottom of this vast network inciting violence in American communities, and the President’s executive actions to address left-wing violence will start to put an end to any illegal activities.”
Here’s what to know.
What does the order say?
The order, named NSPM-7, directs the JTTF and its offices to create a national strategy to “investigate, prosecute, and disrupt entities and individuals engaged in acts of political violence and intimidation” that suppress lawful political activity or obstruct the rule of law.
It highlights “common threads animating this violent conduct,” which it says include “anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity; support for the overthrow of the United States Government; extremism on migration, race, and gender; and hostility towards those who hold traditional American views on family, religion, and morality.”
The order also requires the task force to coordinate investigations of “Antifa,” though experts note the group is an ideology rather than a formal organization, raising questions about how investigations will proceed.
Political violence is described broadly as “sophisticated, organized campaigns of targeted intimidation, radicalization, threats, and violence designed to silence opposing speech, limit political activity, change or direct policy outcomes, and prevent the functioning of a democratic society.”
The order specifically cites organized doxing, rioting, property destruction, threats of violence, and civil disorder.
Who will be affected?
Experts warn that the directive could significantly expand the number of Americans under federal scrutiny.
The order “directs law enforcement resources to target a range of activities which it often characterizes as violent, but also covers many aspects of First Amendment protected activity,” explains Faiza Patel, Director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center.
“It’s not an order that is directed at criminal activity or terrorism, even though it uses those words frequently.”
Nonprofits, their employees, and donors could face investigation if deemed to “aid or abet” those engaged in certain conduct. The Secretary of the Treasury is tasked with disrupting financial networks funding political violence and ensuring organizations that support such activities lose their tax-exempt status.
Civil liberties organizations, including the ACLU, say the order could be used to intimidate critics and target nonprofits and activists.
D.C.-based law firm Arnold & Porter, a regulatory specialist firm, note that investigations “based on a particular subset of beliefs” could implicate organizations engaged in civil rights work, protest support, or politically sensitive initiatives.
What is behind the order?
The order comes amid a widespread crackdown on leftwing groups and organizations in the aftermath of the killing of Charlie Kirk and a shooting at a Dallas ICE facility.
But while many have claimed that there is a rise in violence from the left, research shows that right-wing extremists are behind more political violence.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who has spearheaded that effort, called the order “historical and significant” at the signing at in the Oval Office last week.
“This is the first time in American history that there is an all-of-government effort to dismantle leftwing terrorism, to dismantle antifa, to dismantle the organizations that have been carrying out these acts of political violence and terrorism,” Miller said.
The most recent memo builds upon the Administration’s efforts to crack down on left-wing ideology. Last week, the President designated “Antifa,” short for anti-fascist, as a domestic terror organization. Antifa, however, is an ideology, rather than a unified group.
Patel, of the Brennan Center, says the memo derives from the idea that there’s a rise of political violence on the left, “which includes everything from anti-immigration protests to racial justice protests to actual assassinations like that of Charlie Kirk.” The concerns with the order, she says, have to do with its conflation of actual criminal activity with Americans’ right to free speech and protest.
What is the Joint Terrorism Task Force, or JTTF?
The Joint Terrorism Task Force is a federal law enforcement organization that combats both domestic and international terrorism. The unit collaborates with various federal, state, tribal, and local partners, including the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations, to combat terrorism.
The force grew in scope following the 9/11 terrorist attack, though some cities, such as Portland, have withdrawn their police officers from the JTTF. The task force has a record of controversy given its history of targeting protestors, dissenters, and people of color, according to the ACLU.
Microsoft Enhances Xbox Cloud Gaming Quality and Removes Beta Status
Microsoft has officially removed the beta tag from Xbox Cloud Gaming, marking a significant milestone for the streaming service that launched in 2020. “We’re officially removing the beta tag from Xbox Cloud Gaming,” said Dustin Blackwell, director of gaming and platform communications at Microsoft, in a briefing with The Verge, reports 24brussels.
The transition from beta coincides with important updates, including a notable price increase for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Microsoft is expanding the availability of Xbox Cloud Gaming across additional Game Pass tiers and enhancing the streaming quality and resolution specifically for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.
“We’ll have our highest streaming quality yet for Ultimate subscribers,” Blackwell emphasized. The improved service will support up to 1440p resolution for selected games and devices while maintaining minimal wait times for users.
Several Xbox Cloud Gaming users have recently reported the functionality of 1440p support in titles such as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, with bitrates reaching as high as 27Mbps. Current streams average around 10Mbps, with some devices capable of 17Mbps. The upgrade to 27Mbps is expected to decrease visual artifacts and enhance streaming quality.
This marks the first major improvement to visual quality since Microsoft upgraded the streaming service’s hardware to Xbox Series X-like blades. The previous hardware enhancement in 2021 improved game loading times and frame rates, allowing for optimized gameplay for Xbox Series S/X titles.
It remains unclear whether any further hardware upgrades are in place to support the new 1440p capabilities and higher bitrates. Microsoft did not respond in time for publication regarding the potential use of PC-grade hardware in their Xbox Cloud Gaming setups.
The expansion of Xbox Cloud Gaming to include the new Xbox Game Pass Essential and Premium tiers enables a broader audience of Xbox enthusiasts to access the cloud gaming library, extending cloud access beyond the Ultimate plan for the first time, apart from the free-to-play title Fortnite.
While the 1440p upgrade is currently limited to specific games and devices, Microsoft faces pressure to enhance its visual quality further to compete with services like Nvidia’s GeForce Now. Anticipation builds around possible advancements with Microsoft’s forthcoming next-generation console launch, which could bring significant improvements in 4K resolution and better streaming metrics.
New #COVID-19 strain spreads: A new, highly transmissible COVID-19 strain is causing a wave of #infections across the US.
It has become the dominant strain in the US, surpassing previous variants like NB.1.8.1, or “Nimbus”.As of October 2025, the highly transmissible COVID-19 variant XFG, nicknamed ” #Stratus,” is driving a wave of infections across the United States
About the Stratus variant
Origin: First detected in Southeast Asia in January 2025, Stratus is a hybrid, or recombinant, of two existing Omicron subvariants.
Contagiousness: Its genetic makeup gives it a modest advantage in spread by helping it bind more tightly to human cells. It is also partially immune-evasive, meaning it can sometimes get around antibodies from previous infections and vaccinations.
Severity: The World Health Organization has classified Stratus as a “variant under monitoring” but has assessed the global public health risk as low. For most vaccinated people, infections remain mild.
Symptoms
Symptoms of the Stratus variant can be similar to earlier Omicron strains and other respiratory illnesses, and can include:
Cough and congestion
Fever and chills
Fatigue and muscle aches
Headache
Gastrointestinal issues
Some reports also indicate that a hoarse or raspy voice is a potential early symptom of the Stratus variant.
Spread in the US
Dominance: Wastewater data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that Stratus became the predominant variant in the US by September 2025.
Regional hotspots: While COVID-19 viral activity is “moderate” nationally, some states, including Nevada, Utah, Connecticut, and Delaware, have reported “high” or “very high” levels of the virus in their wastewater. New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Dakotas have also seen increased cases.
Summer wave: This recent surge in cases aligns with the typical summer wave pattern that has occurred each year since the start of the pandemic, driven by new variants, waning immunity, and increased travel.
What you can do
Health experts advise taking precautions to prevent illness and its spread:
Vaccination: The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends updated 2025–2026 COVID vaccines for everyone aged 6 months and older, after consulting with a doctor or pharmacist.
Hygiene: Continue to practice good hand washing and other basic hygiene to limit transmission.
Masks: Wear a mask in crowded indoor settings to improve protection.
Ventilation: Ensure good indoor air ventilation and filtration, especially in public spaces.
