Celebrity lawyer Alex Spiro’s hourly rate has nearly doubled to $3,000 in four years

The lawyer Alex Spiro can often be seen alongside the world’s top executives, athletes, and entertainers. There he is at the defense table with Alec Baldwin; that’s him with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez at an Usher concert; and here he is shooting hoops with Joakim Noah, the former Chicago Bulls all-star.

Spiro’s advice doesn’t come cheap. His hourly rate has hit the $3,000 threshold, as first reported by Reuters.

It has risen quickly: As recently as spring 2021, Spiro charged $1,595 an hour. Two years later, it was $2,180 an hour. Those are the rates that Brock Pierce, the child actor-turned-crypto investor, said he was charged for Spiro’s advice by his law firm Quinn Emanuel, which is trying to stick Pierce with a $1 million legal bill that he says isn’t his responsibility.

That means each year, on average, Spiro’s hourly rate rose more than 16%, outpacing inflation (up an average of 4% across the past five years) and rate increases for other lawyers at top law firms. Over the past three years, the largest US law firms have increased their billing rates by 9% or 10% a year, according to Wells Fargo’s legal specialty group.

Spiro’s hourly rate puts him in a very small club. Reuters reported that his Quinn colleague, William Burck, also charges a rate of $3,000, and two lawyers at the firm Susman Godfrey have also been reported to charge that rate. Some law firms have top deals partners who might also bill at such a rate, though none have been publicly identified, and if you know of any, you should call me.

Large corporate law firms get most of their revenue from billable hours, largely from partners like Spiro who reel in work and then push it down to other lawyers who might charge from $600 to $2,000 an hour. While some clients have pressed for alternatives, some 94% of law-firm partners said in a recent survey that hourly billing was their firm’s primary source of revenue.

“The simple reason why lawyers like Alex Spiro can charge so much is that the work they do is valuable,” said Jonathan Choi, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis who has written about the persistence of the billable hour. When billions of dollars or a decades-long prison sentence is on the line, “litigants think it’s worth it to have the best lawyer they can.”

Spiro declined to comment.

Currently, his cases include a mix of civil and criminal matters. He recently filed two defamation suits, one on behalf of Kim Kardashian and another for a glass company suing a short seller.

This summer, he helped an international financier reduce felony charges related to an alleged Puerto Rican bribery scheme to a misdemeanor. He was recently quoted in The Hill as a “personal attorney” for US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and he has represented Elon Musk and Jay-Z in multiple cases.

He’s also been involved with businesses in a nonlegal capacity. Last month, he was named the chair of CleanCore Solutions, a company with 15 employees that abruptly pivoted in September from selling aqueous ozone cleaning products to selling $175 million in new shares to invest in Dogecoin. He was also described as a business partner of Tom Brady in an announcement by massage robot company Aerscape, which recently named the former Patriots quarterback as its chief innovation officer.

All the money he’s making could buy a lot of ice cream.

I pivoted into AI at Google in the 2010s. Here’s my top tip for breaking into the field, now it’s easier than ever.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with 53-year-old Patrick Leung, a former Google employee who lives in California and works as a CTO. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

In the early 2000s, when I was living in New York City and running my own SaaS company, an early Google employee moved into my building.

We became friends quickly: he was from New Zealand, like me, and a brilliant, super charismatic engineer. I thought that if Google was full of people like him, I should consider working there.

I applied to Google and landed a job as a manager on the team of the online payments system, Google Checkout, in 2007, based in New York.

It was incredible to work at Google and not just because of the free food, famous speakers, and crazy office space. There was an atmosphere of revolution, like we were there to make real change.

I spent over 10 years there, and in early 2017, I pivoted to working on Google Duplex, a calling assistant that uses AI. At that time, it felt like AI was starting to take off, and we were at the forefront.

I wanted to experience working in different parts of Google

I spent a couple of years working on Google Checkout, before taking a brief break from the company to work for a startup in Palo Alto. I returned to Google in December 2009 and spent time on several teams, including Google Maps, emerging markets, and corporate engineering.

One day, I asked a colleague who’d recently moved to a new team what she was working on, but she said she couldn’t really talk about it. It was really unusual for people to be tight-lipped about their work, so I was curious.

I had no idea what I was walking into, but Google Duplex blew me away

I spoke to her manager, who showed me an early demo of the project, which was called Blue Ginger before it became Google Duplex.

It was an AI calling up a restaurant and booking a reservation. Even at that early stage, the voice sounded so real that it reminded me of the movie “Her.” I was blown away.

I wanted to join the team. They were only accepting internal transfers at that point: they had to know who you were and what you’d done. A part of me really liked that exclusivity.

I had a bunch of conversations with the team manager so he could decide if I was a good match. I highlighted my previous career accomplishments and ability to quickly contribute ideas. I can only speculate, but I’d say he chose me for a combination of my communication skills and my track record at Google — I’d launched other products in the past, which probably helped establish my credibility.

I had to retool myself to work on an AI-focused team

I began managing a team working on a visual interface to help human operators assess and correct how the Duplex AI system interpreted phone conversations, to improve the model.

I’d been exposed to machine learning and AI concepts on my previous teams at Google, but I’d never been on one actively building models and doing core data science work.

I brought my experience building software and managing people to the team, and while some members had more expertise in AI, most of us had to retool ourselves to learn this stuff.

I set up long discussions with others on the team who could explain how the system worked, but I wish I’d spent more time meeting with the other AI teams at Google, to get a feel for how they applied AI and machine learning.

At big companies, there are teams of extraordinary people all over the place. If I’d taken advantage of that environment more, I could have met with people who formed Google Brain or DeepMind and learned from them while we were at the same company and were able to be more open with me about their work.

When we launched Google Duplex, we knew it was going to be a big deal

In the lead-up to the launch, we wondered how the product would be received because of growing caution about AI taking people’s jobs.

There was a media frenzy when it launched in 2018. Some people thought it was unethical, and others thought it might be fake. Stephen Colbert even did a satirical skit about us. It was a privilege to be part of a launch that touched the zeitgeist of popular culture.

After 10 years with Google, the time came to move on. In 2019, I joined a financial sciences company as their CTO for private investments. Currently, I’m a CTO at a company called Faro Health, where I’m using AI to improve clinical drug trials.

My top tip for breaking into AI is to build up real-world experience.

If it’s possible in your current job, seek out opportunities to apply large language models to a real business problem. For example, a friend of mine with no coding experience used AI to personalize outreach messages while recruiting for clinical positions, which improved her response rates. If there aren’t opportunities like this at work, do it in your spare time and put it on your résumé.

If you’re looking to work in a certain area, it would probably help if you built a system that was directly applicable to it, but it could even just be something you’re interested in, like summarizing movie reviews.

The barrier to getting involved in this field is lower than it’s ever been. You no longer have to train your own model; you can just start talking to the large language model and do interesting things. You don’t need to be an expert in machine learning to make things happen. Even coding is becomingautomated thanks to vibe coding.

People who demonstrate that they can wield LLMs effectively are going to find jobs.

Air India expands service with 174 new weekly flights for key routes

Air India adds 174 weekly flights for major domestic and international routes

Air India will introduce 174 additional weekly flights to its major domestic and short-haul international routes starting October 26, 2025, as part of its “Northern Winter Schedule”, reports 24brussels.

The revised schedule is designed to enhance connectivity between key Indian cities and popular destinations in Southeast Asia, responding to rising passenger demand. Notably, the frequency of flights between Delhi and Kuala Lumpur will increase from seven to ten per week beginning November 15, while the Delhi-Denpasar (Bali) route will similarly rise from seven to ten weekly flights starting December 1.

On the domestic front, flight frequencies in Rajasthan will see a notable uptick. Air India plans to launch three daily flights between Delhi and Jaipur, and two daily flights between Delhi and Jaisalmer. Additionally, the Delhi-Udaipur route will increase from two to three daily services. Mumbai will also benefit from enhanced connectivity, with increased flights to Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur, coinciding with the imminent tourist season.

Further expansions will also take place in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Flights operating between Delhi and Indore will rise from three to four daily, alongside the addition of flights on the Delhi-Bhopal and Mumbai-Indore routes. In Gujarat, the Mumbai-Bhuj and Delhi-Rajkot routes will see a doubling of daily flights.

Other cities such as Varanasi, Raipur, Port Blair, Aurangabad, Guwahati, Nagpur, Dehradun, Patna, and Amritsar will also witness increased flight services. This extensive network expansion underscores Air India’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for travel during the upcoming winter season.

Furthermore, Air India’s retrofit program for its legacy Airbus A320neo aircraft, initiated in September 2024, is nearing completion. To date, 26 of the 27 legacy A320neo aircraft have undergone retrofitting, boasting new cabin interiors across three classes: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. Combined with other modern single-aisle aircraft, Air India now operates over 100 A320 Family aircraft featuring world-class cabin interiors, significantly enhancing the travel experience on more than 80 domestic and short-haul international routes.
