Afghan foreign minister encourages Indian investment in minerals and seeks Wagah border opening

Afghan FM invites India to invest in minerals, requests opening of Wagah border

Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has urged India to invest in the country’s mineral sector and has requested that New Delhi facilitate trade by opening the Wagah border, which he termed the “fastest trade route” between the two nations, reports 24brussels.

During a press conference in New Delhi, Muttaqi revealed his discussions with India’s Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, focused on economic collaboration and trade matters. He noted the announcement of upgrading India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul to embassy status, with Kabul diplomats expected to arrive in New Delhi soon.

Muttaqi indicated that both sides had reached an agreement concerning trade and economic issues. He emphasized Afghanistan’s proposal for India to invest in various sectors, including minerals, agriculture, and sports.

Further highlighting the potential for collaboration, he elaborated on the importance of the Chabahar port in trade routes. He reiterated the call for the opening of the Wagah border, underlining its significance as a crucial conduit for commerce between Afghanistan and India.

Addressing criticism regarding the absence of women journalists at his initial press conference, Muttaqi clarified that the oversight was due to a “technical issue,” rejecting suggestions of gender discrimination. “The participation list was specific due to the short notice of the event,” he stated, adding that another press interaction will include women journalists.
