US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor begins tenure in New Delhi to enhance US-India ties

US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor at US Embassy in Delhi

The US Embassy in India has officially welcomed Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor, who aims to strengthen ties between the United States and India, reports 24brussels.

Gor is set to engage with Indian government counterparts to explore avenues for enhancing the ambitious strategic partnership, focusing on promoting a safer, stronger, and more prosperous relationship. His inaugural meeting took place today with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, where they addressed the evolving dynamics of the India-US relationship.

Jaishankar expressed his eagerness regarding the discussions, tweeting, “Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility.”

Additionally, Gor held extensive discussions with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, focusing on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and shared priorities. Misri conveyed his well-wishes to Gor for his new position via social media.

During his Senate confirmation hearing on September 12, Gor emphasized the “deep friendship” between former US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a foundational element for advancing bilateral relations. Gor stated, “India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond. India’s geographic position, economic growth, and military capabilities make it a cornerstone of regional stability and a critical part of promoting prosperity and advancing the security interests that our nations share.”

He further mentioned, “As Secretary Rubio said, India is one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world. If confirmed, I will prioritize deepening defence and security cooperation with India.” Gor’s appointment reflects Washington’s ongoing commitment to fortifying ties with New Delhi, particularly in light of the substantial tariffs imposed on India during the Trump administration.

This year, in August, Trump nominated Sergio Gor for the position of India’s ambassador and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Gor’s visit signifies a pivotal move in enhancing the strategic partnership between the two nations across defence, trade, and technology sectors.

Afghanistan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi visited Darul Uloom Deoband on October 11, where he met Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani. Muttaqi expressed appreciation for the reception he received, hoping for improved relations between India and the Taliban, reports 24brussels.

During the meeting, Muttaqi noted, “I am thankful to all of you for the warm welcome given to me by everyone in Deoband and the love showered upon me. In response to questions, Madani clarified that the discussions did not focus on political matters. Addressing security concerns, Madani remarked, “India has had complaints that Afghanistan sent terrorists to India. Now, after this meeting, it is confirmed that no terrorists will come to India from Afghanistan.” Earlier, in an exclusive conversation with ANI, Muttaqi expressed optimism about the trajectory of India-Afghanistan relations and appreciated the warm reception he received from the local community.

Muttaqi remarked, “The journey has been very good so far. Not just the people of Darul Uloom, but all the people of the area have come here. I am grateful to them for the warm welcome they extended to me… The future of India-Afghanistan relations seems very bright,” he stated.
