Shopify’s CEO says the ‘adrenaline’ of his motor racing hobby isn’t about winning

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke is into motor racing.

  • Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke fell in love with motor racing after trying it out with friends.
  • Lütke said he enjoys racing for self-improvement, not just competition.
  • He added that he likes to try out hobbies of people he admires.

The CEO of Shopify likes to go fast.

During an interview on Stripe’s “Cheeky Pint” podcast, published Monday, Tobi Lütke said he enjoys trying out the hobbies of people he admires. He said he started racing cars after visiting the track with friends, for example, and “immediately fell in love” with it.

The German-born entrepreneur has competed in the Rolex 24, a sports car endurance race held at Daytona in January, among other competitions.

Lütke said he was surprised that motor racing stuck with him because he didn’t have a driver’s license for a time, after moving from Germany to Canada. The appeal is not about winning for him.

“I don’t even try to win,” he said. “I’m still competing against myself, and I see all of the other cars as obstacles.”

It’s a hobby that grades you on speed, accuracy, and more to perfect your driving skills and improve each time, Lütke said. He compared lap times to a report card of “all of your inadequacies as a driver.” He said this motivates him to hone his skills and try to outdo himself with each race.

“The immediacy and the adrenaline. It’s just a brilliant thing that I discovered for myself,” Lütke said.

Lütke said he’s taken racing more seriously over the past couple of years and has his sights set on another 24-hour relay race.

He’s not the only tech CEO who’s into racing. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also has an affinity for fast cars on and off the track. Altman likes racing cars and had five, including two McLarens and an old Tesla, two Y Combinator founders said he told them, The New Yorker reported.

Efficiency and speed also seem to be a big deal to Lütke in his professional life. He’s one of many CEOs who are using artificial intelligence to make their businesses more efficient. In an internal memo from April, the Shopify CEO asked managers to prove that AI couldn’t do a better job before they requested to hire someone new.

“Before asking for more Headcount and resources, teams must demonstrate why they cannot get what they want done using AI,” Lütke wrote in the memo that he posted on X after it was leaked.

Shopify did not provide comment on this story.

Even with a large company to run, Lütke should have time for his hobbies if his philosophy is the same as in 2019.

He previously posted to X, then Twitter, about never working overnight and getting the eight-ish hours of sleep he needs to function. He said he’s home by 5:30 p.m. every evening — plenty of time to hit the track or take up new hobbies.

Protests escalate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over outsourcing of colleges and education reforms

Uproar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the government accused of turning education into a business

Protests erupted across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 7 as teachers and students reacted strongly to the provincial government’s plan to outsource under-enrolled colleges and link promotions for college lecturers to MPhil degrees and research work, reports 24brussels.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Professors and Lecturers Association (KPPLA) convened a meeting led by Prof Qazi Zafar Iqbal, where members unanimously resolved to maintain their partial class boycott until the Higher Education Department revokes these controversial policies. In the course of the protest, public college teachers suspended classes after 10 a.m., while students engaged in demonstrations across multiple districts.

The KPPLA action committee announced plans for a press conference to outline their future strategy and urged local representatives to engage with lawmakers regarding the negative consequences of outsourcing educational institutions and the newly proposed service rules mandating an MPhil degree for promotions. The educators called on elected officials to raise these issues in the provincial assembly.

The committee warned of an escalation in protests if the government does not reverse its decisions. Demonstrations were also reported in Charsadda, Swabi, Mardan, and Mohmand districts. In Charsadda, students from the Government Degree College, Shabqadar, blocked roads while carrying placards protesting the “privatization of education,” arguing that these changes would render higher education inaccessible to economically disadvantaged students.

In Swabi, hundreds of students from the Government Postgraduate College, led by the Pakhtun Students Federation, obstructed the Swabi-Mardan Road for several hours until police intervened, assuring them that their concerns would be communicated to higher officials. Meanwhile, in Mardan, the Jamiat Talaba Islam organized protests at College Chowk, condemning the provincial government’s decision to transfer control of 55 colleges to private entities. Protesters claimed that education should be regarded as a fundamental right rather than a commercial commodity.

In Mohmand District, students blocked the Peshawar-Bajaur Highway to demonstrate against the cancellation of the BS programme, threatening a district-wide agitation if their demands remain unmet.

California governor praises large Belgian delegation on trade mission amid challenging times

On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom welcomed a high-level Belgian economic delegation currently on a trade mission in the state. Newsom praised the scale of the delegation, with more than 500 representatives from the business and academic worlds, reports 24brussels.

“Our country is going through difficult times,” said Newsom, a prominent Democratic governor and outspoken critic of US President Donald Trump. “The presence of such a large delegation reminds us of the importance of personal connections.”

The visit also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Belgium’s three regional trade agencies and California’s Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). The agreement aims to create a flexible framework for collaboration in areas such as trade, knowledge exchange, and public-private partnerships.

“This partnership marks a significant step in connecting our economies, entrepreneurs, and innovation ecosystems,” said Isabelle Grippa, CEO of hub.brussels. “We hope it will soon lead to concrete actions, starting with a return delegation from California to Brussels.”

Defence partnerships

In addition to the MoU, the trade mission to California has yielded tangible results for several Belgian companies. On Monday, four companies active in the defence and technology sectors signed contracts with US partners.

Aerospace supplier Asco Industries concluded a strategic partnership with cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks. Thales Belgium will collaborate with MSI Defense Solutions on integrating Belgian 70mm guided rockets and launch systems onto mobile platforms, focusing on anti-drone technologies.

“International cooperation is not a luxury. It’s a necessity.”

Septentrio, which develops satellite navigation receivers, announced a collaboration with Xona Space Systems to design new navigation and timing solutions. VoxelSensors signed an agreement with Summer Robotics to integrate its sensor technology into what is poised to become “the world’s fastest and most agile industrial robots.”

“In a world where defence, technology, and economics are increasingly intertwined, international cooperation is not a luxury. It’s a necessity,” said Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken. “By joining forces with trusted partners in the US, we strengthen not only our industrial position but also our strategic autonomy and security.”

Evangelical support for Israel: theological beliefs and their impact on U.S. policy

Significant tensions between the United States and Israel continue to be shaped by the perspectives of American evangelicals, despite many Americans not directly connecting Christian evangelism with Israel’s status as a Jewish state since 1948, reports 24brussels.

The 2024 Chicago Council Survey indicates that approximately 13% of Americans, or about 44 million individuals are white evangelical Protestants. Historically aligned with Republican values, 61% of these evangelical Protestants identify as Republicans, with only 9% aligning with the Democratic Party, particularly in the southern United States.

Biblical prophecy and fulfillment

Many evangelicals firmly believe that the existence of Israel is a critical component of biblical prophecy from the Book of Revelation. They argue that a sovereign Jewish nation in Israel is necessary for the second coming of Jesus, which they view as central to Christian theology. This belief establishes a significant divergence in perspectives towards Israel between evangelicals and other Americans.

Pew Research data from 2013 shows that 82% of white evangelical Christians believe God granted Israel to the Jewish people, a view nearly identical to that held by ultra-Orthodox Jews (81%). In contrast, this belief is shared by 55% of all Christians and just 44% of the broader American population.

Religious obligation and covenant theology

Evangelicals’ views on Israel significantly influence their perspectives on U.S. policy. A notable example is the Trump administration’s 2018 decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, an action that sparked considerable controversy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, thereby reversing long-standing international consensus on the city’s status. A University of Maryland poll conducted shortly before the move revealed that while 31% of Americans supported the relocation, nearly two-thirds opposed it. Among evangelicals, however, support was substantial, with 53% in favor.

Christian Zionism and dispensationalism

Christian Zionists express strong opposition to replacement theology, holding that the Jewish people maintain an enduring covenant with God. Despite some problematic attitudes, Jewish leaders often navigate the complex relationship with Christian Zionists, weighing the necessity of their support against underlying objectives that may threaten Jewish survival. Critics like historian Donald Lewis categorize Christian Zionist theology as a “theology of esteem,” distinguishing it from historical antisemitic viewpoints.

This theological stance posits that while Christian Zionism supports Jewish nationalism, it ultimately undermines the status of Judaism as a valid faith, advocating for Jewish conversion as a fulfillment of scripture.

Theological belief in the Jewish role in salvation history

Over two thousand years, Christian perspectives have often overlooked their Jewish roots and responsibilities. Following the Second Vatican Council, the Church has recognized the importance of reevaluating its relationship with the Jewish community, understanding the complexities of Jewish faith, and acknowledging a shared spiritual heritage.

Engaging in meaningful dialogue with Jews can enhance Catholic appreciation of their Jewish counterparts’ relationship with God and the Creator, deepening respect for their beliefs and the distinct ways they articulate an ordered creation and eschatological visions.

Political influence and US foreign policy connections

White evangelicals exhibit a pronounced belief that the U.S. does not provide sufficient support for Israel. Among evangelicals surveyed, 35% feel Washington should increase assistance to Israel, contrasting sharply with only 20% of the general populace. Furthermore, 60% of evangelicals expressed opposition to any limitations on U.S. military aid to Israel, compared to 39% of mainline Protestants and 42% of Catholics.

Despite broader views within American society, the evangelical commitment to Israel often translates into starkly different attitudes towards Palestinians, with some factions depicting them as adversaries. The Heritage Foundation recently advocated for the rejection of refugees from Gaza, arguing that the Palestinian population shows no intent to assimilate into American culture or express loyalty to the U.S. and its allies.

Support for Israel as a step toward the second coming of Christ

There are signs that younger evangelicals may not align as closely with traditional views on Israel’s role in eschatology. However, a considerable segment of the Republican voter base remains influenced by Christian Zionism, complicating efforts to address the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

American Christian Zionists actively support Israel, often disregarding the ramifications of their actions on Palestinians. Through their anticipation of biblical prophecies, they accept, if not endorse, violence against innocent civilians in the name of their faith. While many significant evangelical networks maintain a Zionist position, it is essential to acknowledge that not all evangelicals share this perspective.
