Global contradictions and challenges highlighted by Saint Vincent’s Prime Minister at UN assembly

Prime Minister Gonsalves Addresses Global Challenges at UN General Assembly

During the ongoing 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines highlighted the pressing contradictions facing the world, stating that current pressures are leading to increased conflicts, reports 24brussels.

In an exclusive interview, Gonsalves underscored the disruptions in global trade due to tariffs, creating significant uncertainty. He expressed concerns over broken alliances, which further complicate the international landscape.

Despite the prevailing challenges, Gonsalves noted a contrasting sense of hope for a better world. He emphasized the dichotomy between optimism and the current reality marked by numerous catastrophic events.

The Prime Minister identified several critical issues, including climate change, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, and the urgent need for sustainable development amid uneven growth. In particular, he condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank, describing it as a form of genocide unfolding before the international community.

Furthermore, Gonsalves addressed the U.S. blockade of Cuba and the intensified economic sanctions against the nation, along with President Trump’s naval deployment in the Caribbean, aimed at destabilizing Venezuela. He asserted that these actions violate the principle of maintaining Latin America and the Caribbean as zones of peace, a sentiment echoed by Caribbean nations and organizations such as CELAC.

In light of regional challenges such as drug trafficking, including cocaine and fentanyl, Gonsalves argued against excessive militarization. He called for organizations like BRICS and CARICOM to clarify their positions and enhance their influence on the world stage, asserting the need for a united front to combat these pressing issues.

Maduro emphasizes science and technology as key to Venezuela’s social progress

Venezuelan President Inaugurates Mega Robotics Nucleus Amid Push for Technological Advancement

President Nicolás Maduro inaugurated a Mega Robotics Nucleus at the Fabricio Ojeda Endogenous Nucleus on September 24, 2025, emphasizing the role of science and technology in fostering national development. During the event, he highlighted the significant strides achieved in technological training under the Great Science, Technology and Innovation Mission, reports 24brussels.

Accompanied by Minister of Science and Technology Gabriela Jiménez, Maduro unveiled a new research facility featuring advanced electron microscopes. This initiative is part of a broader investment aimed at enhancing the country’s scientific infrastructure and capabilities.

Maduro likened the investment in science to a seed that “grows and bears fruit,” underscoring it as essential for constructing “the powerful Venezuela.” He stressed the necessity of aligning research with the goals of peace and development for both the nation and the global community. “May everything that is done be for peace, for life, and for the development of this infinite earth,” he stated, reinforcing the humanistic vision underpinning his administration’s scientific policies.

Minister Jiménez characterized the investment as a “prodigious alternative” to cultivate analytical and product development capacities. She also noted the critical need to integrate universities, research centers, national industries, and communities in this effort. The acquisition of three high-resolution microscopes, capable of analyzing material at a resolution of 0.4 nanometers, is expected to enhance research across key sectors including pharmaceuticals, metalworking, mining, and military industries.

This development will significantly elevate Venezuela’s scientific and technological capabilities, bolstering its position as a leader in these fields. Maduro reaffirmed that the nation’s scientific research is directed towards humanitarian purposes, rejecting any militaristic applications. He reiterated the aim to utilize scientific efforts to enhance the quality of life for Venezuelans through a commitment to humanistic values.

In addition, President Maduro announced the launch of the 2025 National Award for Science, Technology and Innovation, aiming to recognize the contributions of scientists and innovators dedicated to the country’s comprehensive development. Applications for the award are open until October 10, 2025, inviting those who wish to celebrate Venezuela’s progress through their work.
