Microsoft launches Windows ML to enhance AI integration in apps

Microsoft Launches Windows ML for Developers

Microsoft’s Windows ML platform is now generally available for production use, granting developers the ability to integrate artificial intelligence into their Windows applications more efficiently, reports 24brussels. The announcement, made on September 25, 2025, highlights that Windows ML is compatible with all devices running Windows 11 24H2 or newer, establishing a local AI inference framework aimed at creating more “responsive, private, and cost-effective” AI experiences.

The platform operates through silicon partners that create and manage execution providers. According to Microsoft, Windows ML distributes these providers to run AI workloads effectively on devices, serving as a hardware abstraction layer for developers to achieve optimal performance tailored to specific hardware, including CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs.

Initially unveiled for Windows 10 in 2018, Windows ML has been refined over several years, with major software developers such as Adobe, McAfee, and Topaz Labs now committed to adopting the platform in their upcoming releases after contributing to its testing during development.

Adobe is set to integrate Windows ML within its Premiere Pro and After Effects software, utilizing local NPUs for advanced features such as semantic search, audio tagging, and scene edit detection. In parallel, McAfee plans to leverage Windows ML for the automatic detection of deepfake videos and scams on social media platforms. Topaz Labs has harnessed the platform to enhance its image editing software with AI capabilities. By streamlining the development of AI tools in Windows-based applications, Microsoft aims to attract more consumers to its operating system.

With the potential for rapid expansion in AI functionality across diverse applications, the launch of Windows ML signifies a pivotal step in enhancing user experiences and developer capabilities on Windows devices.
