Hezbollah maintains armed stance, rejecting Lebanese government’s disarmament plan

Hezbollah Reaffirms Stance Against Disarmament Amid Commemoration Events

On September 27, 2025, Hezbollah reiterated its refusal to disarm in the face of Lebanese government demands during a massive gathering in Beirut, marking the first anniversary of the assassination of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli bombing, reports 24brussels.

Thousands of supporters filled the streets around Nasrallah’s mausoleum in Dahyeh, displaying portraits of the slain leader and Hezbollah flags, underscoring the group’s enduring base of support one year after the conflict with Israel. The gathering came at a time when the Lebanese government is pressuring the Shiite organization to disarm, with plans to centralize all weaponry under the official armed forces before the end of the year.

Naim Qassem, the current head of Hezbollah, delivered a defiant message to supporters, declaring, “We will not leave the war front and we will not abandon weapons.” His remarks were broadcast on large screens at the commemoration event, reflecting Hezbollah’s commitment to resist governmental pressure. Qassem condemned any disarmament initiative as detrimental to Lebanon’s defense capabilities against Israel.

Qassem also called for national unity while urging the government to focus on liberating the five hills in southern Lebanon currently occupied by Israeli forces. Addressing the crowd, he emphasized the symbolic significance of the commemorative moment, inviting attendees to pause collectively at 6:21 p.m. local time—the exact time of Nasrallah’s death.

Hezbollah encouraged supporters to gather in mosques and significant locations at that moment, many congregating at the site of the bombing where Nasrallah was killed. A Hezbollah supporter voiced strong sentiments against disarmament, stating, “They ask us to give up our weapons while we are standing in front of a massive hole where so many people were killed.” Another attendee echoed this perspective, asserting that “Without the resistance there would be no Lebanon.”

This rejuvenated defiance from Hezbollah takes place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions with Israel and internal pressures to consolidate national defense under state control. As Lebanon grapples with its security landscape, Hezbollah’s stance reflects the complex interplay of local and regional interests.
