Amazon Unveils New Echo Dot Max Smart Speaker

Amazon introduced its latest smart speaker, the Echo Dot Max, during its fall hardware event on September 30, 2025. This new device retains the company’s signature spherical design but features a flat front to accommodate control buttons and an LED light ring, reports 24brussels.

Priced at $99.99, the Echo Dot Max sits at the same price point as Apple’s HomePod Mini, but costs double the fifth-generation Echo Dot. Amazon claims the redesigned sound system delivers nearly three times more bass than its predecessor. The device was unveiled alongside the new Echo Studio, Echo Show 8, and Show 11, which Amazon asserts are their “most powerful Echo devices ever created.”

The Echo Dot Max utilizes Amazon’s new AZ3 processor to enhance edge-based computing capabilities and improve its ability to detect conversations by reducing background noise. For the first time, the Echo Dot integrates its speaker directly into the device chassis, incorporating two speakers, a high-excursion woofer, and a custom tweeter to produce crisp high notes.

Amazon designates this model as the “first-ever” Echo Dot Max, which raises questions about whether it is a new generation of the Echo Dot family or a standalone product. The last major upgrade to Echo Dot occurred in 2022, which introduced features such as a temperature sensor and enhanced bass, as well as the capability to function as an Eero Mesh Wi-Fi extender. Amazon also released the budget-friendly Echo Pop speaker in 2023, but the Echo Dot had been due for an update.

The new Echo Dot Max will also be compatible with the company’s AI-enhanced voice assistant, available through the new Alexa Plus subscription. Launched in early access in March, Alexa Plus enables fluid back-and-forth conversations and allows users to manage multiple smart home devices with a single request. The system can also remember user preferences, tailoring suggestions based on individual tastes.

Antwerp Police Tackle Wrong-Way Riders in Schinpoort Tunnel

Antwerp police apprehended 54 cyclists and scooter riders within two hours for riding the wrong way in the Schinpoort Tunnel. The fines for this violation range from €58 to €116. Wouter Bruyns from the police emphasized the heightened risk of collisions inherent in such behavior, reports 24brussels.

The Schinpoort Tunnel, located near the AFAS Dome, has become a critical area for traffic enforcement due to the potential hazards it presents. Officers indicated that the wrong-way riding poses a significant danger, as drivers may not be able to react swiftly enough to avert accidents.

The heightened police presence in the tunnel stems from numerous complaints from both residents and motorists regarding safety concerns. Repeated violations by cyclists and scooter riders particularly compound the risks on this stretch, prompting officers to increase their monitoring efforts.

According to city planners and cycling experts, the traffic regulations around the tunnel can be confusing for cyclists. Before reaching the tunnel, cyclists can ride in both directions on the path from Park Spoor Noord. However, just before the tunnel, the allowance for riding against traffic ceases, leading to potential misunderstandings.

“People often tell us that they’re committing a violation because the infrastructure is inadequate. Unfortunately, that’s not a valid reason. The risk of collisions is very high, especially when cyclists have to swerve to avoid each other in a narrow lane and collide,”

Wouter Bruyns of the Antwerp police expressed these concerns, underscoring the importance of adhering to traffic regulations for cyclist safety. Antwerp authorities have previously implemented measures aimed at improving safety for cyclists and scooter riders. In September 2024, the city initiated a ban on cargo bikes and heavy bicycles from using the escalators in the Sint-Annatunnel, a pedestrian and cycling tunnel beneath the Scheldt River.

This ban was enacted following an increase in the number of cargo and electric bikes utilizing the escalators, which resulted in property damage and safety threats for other users. To ensure compliance, barriers were installed at the escalators, alongside an awareness campaign educating cyclists about the use of lifts instead.
