Trump criticizes the United Nations, calling for an end to open borders at assembly

Trump Calls for End to Open Borders During UN Address

During the 80th United Nations General Assembly on September 23, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump urged world leaders to conclude the “failed experiment of open borders,” emphasizing swift action to control migration flows, reports 24brussels.

In a speech addressing global leaders, Trump condemned immigration as “out of control” and insisted that many nations suffer from the adverse effects of migration. He asserted that countries like Germany, Austria, and Switzerland face significant challenges, claiming many inmates in their prisons are former asylum seekers who have “repaid kindness with crime.”

Trump declared, “It’s time to put an end to this failed experiment of open borders. You have to end it once and for all,” warning that Europe risks losing its heritage due to unchecked migration. He expressed concern over current issues, including energy crises linked to immigration patterns, stating, “It pains me to see [Europe] affected.” Trump pushed for a reevaluation of European energy policies while promoting U.S. coal resources.

In addition to his remarks about migration, Trump criticized the United Nations for failing to address global conflicts effectively. He accused the organization of creating challenges rather than solving them, claiming that the U.N. allocated US$372 million to support the journey of migrants to the United States. “Imagine that! The U.N. supports those who enter the United States illegally, and then we have to deport them,” he said, defending his administration’s stringent border policies.

Trump’s critique extended to the U.N.’s performance in international relations, asserting, “Too bad I had to do these things instead of the United Nations.” He highlighted that during his tenure, he resolved seven global wars while lamenting the U.N.’s inaction.

Among his allegations, Trump characterized the U.N. as inefficient, noting, “They seem to do is write very strongly worded letters and then not follow through. It’s all talk.” He also claimed that his proposal to renovate the U.N. headquarters for US$500 million was dismissed in favor of a more costly plan.

On environmental matters, Trump dismissed U.N. warnings about climate change as erroneous and labeled climate change predictions as a “climate hoax,” further indicating his dissent toward established scientific consensus. “All those predictions made by the U.N. and many others… were wrong,” he stated.

Trump’s address not only spotlighted his administration’s stance on immigration but also reinforced longstanding critiques of international institutions, signaling a continuation of his confrontational approach to both domestic and foreign policy.
