Kallas criticizes Borrell’s ineffective approach to Gaza, emphasizes need for EU consensus

Borrell’s Efforts on Gaza Aid Criticized by Kallas

“Nothing happened with Borrell,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas told journalists from El País and other Spanish outlets, referring to the EU’s foreign policy chief’s recent initiatives regarding humanitarian aid to Gaza, reports 24brussels.

During his tenure, Josep Borrell emerged as a leading critic of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, attempting to suspend the EU’s political dialogue with Tel Aviv. However, his efforts proved unsuccessful.

Since departing from his role in November, Borrell has repeatedly condemned the EU’s response in the region, claiming that the institutions are failing to address reported war crimes effectively.

Kallas expressed her alignment with the “frustration” shared by many Europeans, admitting that the EU’s actions towards Israel have been “insufficient” and the situation “catastrophic.” She noted her desire for stronger measures but acknowledged the need for a political consensus among EU member states, which is currently lacking.

The Prime Minister advocated for her diplomatic strategy, arguing that Borrell’s “strong language” has not effectively halted the violence in Gaza or persuaded EU members to adopt planned measures. “I represent the countries that are tough on Netanyahu, but also those that have a different approach,” Kallas emphasized. “The important thing is to save lives on the ground; it’s not the words that matter.”
