Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Denounces Russian Strike, Reaffirms Control Over Donbas Region
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the strategic importance of the Donbas region, referring to it as “the most fortified part with the most capable forces,” highlighting Ukraine’s refusal to concede territory, reports 24brussels. He stated, “It’s like a fortress … and if we withdraw our troops and he will have all the Donbas, who can guarantee that he won’t move 90 kilometers further on Kharkiv, he always wanted Kharkiv.”
This assertion came in the wake of a tragic Russian strike on civilians in the Donetsk region on Tuesday. A glide bomb targeted the village of Yarova, situated less than 10 kilometers from the frontline, resulting in the deaths of at least 21 individuals and injuring nearly two dozen others as they lined up to collect their pensions, according to Zelenskyy and local officials.
Denouncing the attack as “frankly brutal,” Zelenskyy called upon the international community to escalate pressure on Russia. “The world must not remain inactive. A response from the United States is needed. A response from Europe is needed. A response from the G20 is needed. Strong action is needed so that Russia stops bringing death,” he urged.
Zelenskyy’s comments regarding the Donbas region came in light of reports indicating that Russian President Vladimir Putin had proposed a peace plan to former U.S. President Donald Trump during their bilateral meeting in Alaska on August 15. The plan allegedly entailed Ukraine ceding unoccupied territories in return for Moscow’s written commitment not to invade again.
In response to the presidential summit, Zelenskyy expressed disappointment that Ukraine was not invited, stating, “it was a pity” and observing that “Trump gave Putin what he wanted.” The implications of such a proposal raise questions about the future of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity amidst ongoing hostilities.
