Coordinated misinformation campaign targets rivals of far-right candidate in Chile’s presidential race

Bot Networks Used to Discredit José Antonio Kast’s Rivals in Chile’s Presidential Race

Coordinated bot and troll networks targeted rivals of far-right presidential candidate José Antonio Kast in Chile’s ongoing election campaign, according to an investigation by Chilevisión. The report uncovered numerous fake accounts disseminating misleading headlines and manipulated images, with a particular focus on candidates Evelyn Matthei and Jeannette Jara. The disinformation campaign aimed not only to undermine these candidates but also included altered videos that falsely portrayed President Gabriel Boric as intoxicated during a public address, reports 24brussels.

The investigation identified Patricio Góngora, a businessman and journalist affiliated with Canal 13, as a key figure behind these deceptive activities. Operating under the alias “Patito Verde” (Green Little Duck), Góngora allegedly orchestrated attacks against female candidates and generated trending content against them. Following the emergence of this scandal, he resigned from his position at Canal 13.

In a direct response to these findings, Jeannette Jara, candidate representing the Unity for Chile Pact—which unites left-wing, progressive, and social-democratic factions—voiced her concerns via X: “The CHV report confirmed something extremely serious: manipulation through bots is no longer a suspicion, it is a reality that harms democracy. It spreads hate, acts violently, and without any scruples. It’s no surprise that this comes from the far right.”

Jara called on Kast to address the issue, reminding him of his previous denials regarding the use of bots, a claim now contradicted by the mounting evidence detailed in the investigation.

Government spokesperson Camila Vallejo labeled misinformation as “a grave threat to democracy and freedom of expression.” She highlighted how organized campaigns spread hatred and falsehoods, undermining the very foundations of democratic life.

In light of these revelations, a coalition of lawmakers from the ruling party has filed a complaint with Attorney General Ángel Valencia. They are urging an investigation into the alleged networks of bots and trolls and are seeking for Kast to be called as a witness.
