Google’s Gemini introduces AI-generated bedtime stories with customizable illustrations

Google Unveils Gemini’s Storybook Feature, Ushering in a New Era of AI-Generated Stories

Google has launched an innovative tool within its Gemini AI chatbot, enabling users to create illustrated stories simply by providing descriptions. The feature, known as “Storybook,” generates ten-page narratives complete with text and illustrations, creating a reading experience that can be shared aloud, reports 24brussels.

This new capability allows users to customize their stories by requesting specific art styles, including claymation, anime, and comics. Additionally, there is functionality for users to upload personal images—such as a child’s drawing—for the AI to incorporate into the story, further adding a personal touch to the narratives.

In an initial test of the feature, the AI-generated story about a catfish struggling to forge friendships in a new aquarium revealed some expected shortcomings. The plot progressed with tank inhabitants attempting to move a marble, though the narrative quality lagged behind expectations. However, an illustration featuring a fish with a human arm highlighted the quirks of AI creativity.

Another generated story showcased bizarre imagery, such as a spaghetti sauce panel resembling a cartoon crime scene, and a depiction of a family watching television that incorrectly placed the screen. Instances of odd results were not isolated; even Google’s promotional video for this feature featured a woman building a spaceship, creating confusion with her actions and sound effects.

Despite minor inconsistencies in character designs, the overall output from Gemini performed competently in several test stories. However, user-uploaded images, like a drawing of a cartoon cat, did not always align with the AI’s vision, indicating some limitations in artistic interpretation.

The Gemini Storybook feature is now available globally across both desktop and mobile platforms, supporting all the languages currently in use by Gemini, thereby broadening accessibility to this novel storytelling approach.

Waste Warriors aim to harvest 70,000 kilograms of pears in Vlezenbeek for juice production

Velzenbeek – In Vlezenbeek, Waste Warriors and Thomas Schiltz are set to harvest 70,000 kg of pears from a family orchard and convert them into juice before New Year’s Eve to combat food waste.

According to VRT News, the family, which inherited the 3-hectare orchard from their grandparents, is unable to harvest the ripe pears as the company previously hired for maintenance has ceased operations. Without assistance, they risk losing the entire harvest, leading to significant waste.

How Waste Warriors Aim to Rescue 70,000 Kilograms of Pears in Vlezenbeek

In response to the situation, the family has enlisted the help of Waste Warriors, an organization dedicated to rescuing surplus fruits and vegetables. Thomas Schiltz emphasized the urgency of picking the pears swiftly to ensure they can be transformed into pear juice.

Since its inception in early 2025, Waste Warriors has successfully saved 25,000 kilograms of produce that would otherwise have been discarded. The organization repurposes this food into longer-lasting products including soups, sauces, juices, jams, and cookies.

“We also want to do the same with the pears from Vlezenbeek. We’d like to make pear juice from them. That has a longer shelf life than the fruit itself, and we want to sell it on New Year’s Eve,” Schiltz stated.

To execute the plan, Waste Warriors will convene on Monday, August 9, 2025, to strategize the harvesting. They will decide whether to hire pickers or organize a “pick-your-own” event, allowing community members to gather pears, retain some for themselves, and donate the remainder for juice production.

Established in Belgium in 2025, Waste Warriors focuses on saving fruits and vegetables deemed unattractive or imperfect in size. The organization collects these items and repurposes them into products such as juice, soup, and jam, while also supplying food banks to assist the local community. Plans for expansion include increasing product sales to further support their mission.

US envoy defends Israel’s Gaza strategy amid growing international criticism

Israel’s Strategic Plan Approved Amidst International Criticism

The Israeli government’s security cabinet formally approved a controversial plan early Friday aimed at dismantling Hamas’ military capabilities, securing the return of hostages, and establishing Israeli oversight in the Gaza Strip. This initiative also envisions the creation of a new governance structure that would not be led by either Hamas or the Palestinian Authority, reports 24brussels.

This military escalation has raised alarms globally as humanitarian conditions in Gaza deteriorate. The situation prompted strong rebukes, with even Germany, a close ally of Israel, halting certain arms exports in light of the intensified military campaign.

In a defensive stance, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz asserted on social media that any nations threatening sanctions in opposition to their actions would not dissuade Israel from its objectives.

The response from political figures has been sharply divided. Huckabee, referring to historical events from World War II, criticized UK policies regarding Israel’s actions, alluding to the bombing of Dresden. “Did the UK surrender to Nazis and drop food to them? If you had been PM then, the UK would be speaking German!” he stated, drawing parallels between past conflicts and contemporary issues.

The dire humanitarian situation, exacerbated by ongoing military operations, emphasizes the complexity and the deep-rooted hostilities in the region, prompting calls for urgent diplomatic intervention to address the crisis and mitigate civilian suffering.
