Trump sends nuclear submarines amid tensions with Russia

US Orders Deployment of Nuclear Submarines Amidst Escalating Tensions with Russia

US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines in a dramatic response to escalating tensions with Russia over Ukraine and trade tariffs. Trump’s announcement follows a series of heated exchanges with Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and former president, on social media.

The decision to position nuclear submarines marks a significant increase in military readiness as Trump addressed provocative statements from Russian officials. “Based on the highly provocative statements,” Trump noted, he had “ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”

His remarks came shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow has begun mass production of its hypersonic nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile, which could be deployed near Belarus by the end of the year, according to sources. This escalation aligns with a deadline set by Trump for Russia to take measures to resolve the Ukraine conflict or face additional sanctions.

Despite mounting pressure from the United States, Russia’s military operations against Ukraine continue unabated, with reported attacks resulting in significant civilian casualties. Recently, a combined missile and drone strike on Kyiv resulted in the deaths of 31 individuals, including five children.

Putin has refused to consider a ceasefire, stating his demands for an end to the conflict remain unchanged, including Ukraine’s withdrawal from certain territories and cessation of NATO membership aspirations.

Exchanges and Strategic Messaging

Trump’s post did not specify whether the submarines are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed, nor did he provide details on their specific deployment locations, which remain classified. The United States maintains a robust nuclear arsenal, with subs patrolling strategically significant areas as part of its nuclear triad.

Medvedev’s comments that provoked Trump’s response included criticisms of the former president and mentions of Russia’s nuclear strategy, specifically referencing the ‘Dead Hand’ system from the Cold War. This system was designed to control nuclear weapons in the event of a catastrophic strike against Russia.

In earlier comments, Trump had denigrated the economies of Russia and India, prompting an online rebuke from Medvedev, who accused Trump of “playing the ultimatum game.” Trump responded by deriding Medvedev as a “failed former President of Russia” and cautioned him to “watch his words,” suggesting that he was treading into dangerous territory.

Medvedev’s role as a vocal supporter of Putin’s strategy in Ukraine contrasts with his previous image as a reformer, showcasing a shift to extreme nationalist rhetoric in line with Kremlin messaging. Despite his prominent title, his influence within the Russian government appears limited.

This ongoing exchange reflects the fragile state of US-Russian relations, with both nations navigating a complex landscape of military posturing and diplomatic tensions, further complicating efforts for resolution in Ukraine, reports 24brussels.
