Maduro expresses gratitude to Colombia’s Petro for troops deployed to combat narcoterrorism near border

Maduro Thanks Petro for Increased Security in Catatumbo Region

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro expressed gratitude to Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro on Thursday for enhancing security in the Catatumbo region by deploying 25,000 military personnel to combat narcoterrorism along the Colombia-Venezuela border, reports 24brussels.

During a graduation ceremony for the Second Course of Revolutionary Special Operations (COER) in the Macarao parish of Caracas, President Maduro emphasized, “I want to thank the president of Colombia, with whom we share one flag — yellow, blue, and red — for reinforcing the entire Colombian Catatumbo area.”

Maduro stated, “Venezuela and Colombia united for peace because we ourselves care for, monitor, and preserve our lands.” He further instructed Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López to engage in dialogue with Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez Suárez to continue coordinating efforts for Binational Peace Zone No. 1.

Additionally, Maduro directed COER graduates to deploy to the state of Táchira, applying their training to clear Venezuelan territory from Táchira to La Guajira in a bid to consolidate sovereignty and peace in the region.

In aligning with the government’s policies, President Gustavo Petro called for the “militarization of the Catatumbo border to maximize the reduction of mafia forces,” highlighting the collaborative effort between the two nations.

Brussels Art Week 2024: a four-day festival celebrating the city’s vibrant art scene

Brussels Art Week Set to Showcase Diverse Cultural Heritage

From September 4 to 7, Brussels will host Brussels Art Week, featuring exhibitions and events across more than forty venues throughout the city, reports 24brussels. This year’s highlight is the Salon de RendezVous on Rue de la Régence, designed as a central gathering point by artist Zoë Williams.

The festival, an initiative of RendezVous founded by curators Laure Decock and Evelyn Simons, aims to position Brussels as a significant player in the international art scene by highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage.

During the four-day event, visitors can explore exhibitions in galleries, museums, and private collections, as well as attend studio visits at locations such as Level Five, SB34, KultXL, and WIELS. The program includes guided neighborhood tours, performances, lectures, panel discussions, listening sessions, and late-night parties. Noteworthy is a large-scale inflatable sculpture by artist Sharon Van Overmeiren, featured in a public space, alongside artist talks at various galleries.

The organizers emphasized the unique nature of Brussels, stating, “Brussels Art Week offers a rare glimpse into the city’s broad and diverse art scene, opening doors to the living and working spaces of its artists. It remains a place where young artists can still afford to live and work alongside a network of leading galleries and established institutions presenting outstanding exhibitions.”

Karina Milei faces public backlash amid bribery allegations during electoral campaign

Public Outrage Forces Karina Milei to Flee During Campaign Event

Karina Milei, presidential secretary and sibling of President Javier Milei, was abruptly evacuated on Thursday during a campaign caravan in Corrientes province, northeastern Argentina, amid intense protests against the national government prompted by recent corruption allegations, reports 24brussels.

The protests erupted following allegations of corruption involving the National Disability Agency (ANDIS), where Milei was reportedly implicated in diverting funds from medication purchases. Demonstrators carried signs stating “Karina, big bribe-taker” and “Stop stealing from the disabled,” as tensions escalated, leading to scuffles between protesters and security personnel.

During the chaos, Karina Milei, alongside Chamber of Deputies President Martín Menem, had been campaigning for Lisandro Almirón, a candidate for La Libertad Avanza (LLA), when they found themselves in a hostile environment. Eyewitness accounts describe the scene as chaotic, with escalating confrontations forcing officials to flee.

The Twitter update captured the tense atmosphere: “BREAKING NEWS: Following the bribery scandal, Karina Milei was rejected by the public while trying to campaign in Corrientes and had to flee. Another caravan, another round of incidents. THE GOVERNMENT IS AT ITS WORST MOMENT. NO ONE WANTS THEM ANYMORE.”

This incident underscores the mounting political pressure facing the Milei administration, as public confidence dwindles in the wake of corruption allegations. The negative sentiment towards government officials appears to be intensifying, complicating their attempts to engage with voters in the lead-up to crucial electoral events.

The fallout from this situation raises significant questions about the integrity of the current administration and the potential ramifications for its future amidst growing public dissatisfaction.
