Cemeteries in Heppen and Leopoldsburg to enhance accessibility with new paths

Leopoldsburg – Work has commenced at Heppen and Leopoldsburg cemeteries in Limburg to enhance accessibility with wheelchair-friendly paths constructed from 50-year concrete slabs. Mayor Marleen Kauffman (CD&V) announced that the renovations, which include the restoration of graves, are scheduled for completion by November 1, 2025, reports 24brussels.

The project aims to facilitate access for wheelchair users by upgrading existing paths rather than removing them. The new prefabricated concrete slabs are designed for durability and longevity.

“This way, people with reduced mobility can access the graves more easily and effectively,”

said Mayor Kauffman.

How are Heppen and Leopoldsburg cemeteries improving accessibility by Nov 1?

The municipality has begun marking graves with expired concessions and has placed clear signs to inform families. A designated official will reach out to all affected families.

“This gives everyone the chance to extend their concession if they want,”

the mayor added.

The authorities are also focusing on maintaining historically significant graves, ensuring that at least one is restored each year to honor local history.

“We want to preserve these sites and honour our local history,”

the mayor emphasized. All renovation and accessibility projects, including the path enhancements and grave restorations, are expected to be completed by the set deadline of November 1, 2025.

In 2023, Leuven implemented a significant initiative to improve accessibility in its historic center, introducing wheelchair-friendly routes that enable safe movement for those with disabilities. A year prior, in 2022, Mechelen invested in maintaining its communal cemetery, where numerous World War II graves reside, enhancing paths and ensuring careful restoration to protect the site’s historical integrity.
