Moscow hesitates on Putin-Zelenskyy summit amid Trump’s increasing pressure

Trump and Zelenskyy Express Optimism Over Potential Peace Talks with Putin

Amid heightened tensions, former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin has sparked speculation about a potential breakthrough in talks aimed at ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism following the call, stating, “We are ready,” and noted plans for a summit could be “formalized in some way in the next week or 10 days,” reports 24brussels.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed Putin’s indicated willingness to engage in dialogue, remarking in an interview with Fox News, “Just the fact that Putin is saying, ‘sure, I’ll meet with Zelenskyy’ — that’s a big deal.” However, Rubio tempered expectations, emphasizing that while the dialogue is a step forward, “We’re not there yet” and outlining ongoing efforts to reach this goal.

During his recent meeting with Trump in Alaska, Putin reiterated the necessity of addressing the “root causes” of the Ukraine conflict to achieve lasting peace. This statement underscores the Kremlin leader’s steadfast war objectives, which remain ambitious and unchanged.

Analysts suggest that these ambitions include a comprehensive list of demands Russia has pursued since the onset of war, such as compelling Ukraine to adopt a neutral stance, ceding territory in the eastern regions, significantly reducing its military capabilities, and abandoning its efforts to join NATO.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that Trump and Putin had tentatively agreed to a meeting “within the next two weeks.” However, he expressed caution, stating, “We don’t know whether the Russian president will have the courage to attend such a summit. Therefore, persuasion is needed.”
