Macron rebukes Netanyahu over claims of antisemitism linked to Palestinian state recognition

Macron Responds to Netanyahu’s Claims on Antisemitism and Palestinian State Recognition

French President Emmanuel Macron’s office issued a strong statement on Tuesday following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that recognizing a Palestinian state had led to increased antisemitic violence in France, labeling the assertion as “erroneous, despicable and will not go unanswered,” reports 24brussels.

The statement emphasized Macron’s commitment to combating antisemitism in France, particularly in light of the rising incidents post the October 7, 2023 terror attacks. “France protects and will always protect its compatriots of the Jewish faith,” the statement affirmed, underlining the need for seriousness and responsibility during these sensitive times rather than confusion and manipulation.

On July 24, Macron announced that France would officially recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming U.N. General Assembly in September, a declaration that provoked swift backlash from Israel, which argued it would reward Hamas for the terror attack that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 hostages. In retaliation, Israel increased its military operations in the Gaza Strip, aiming to eradicate Hamas.

Reports indicate that more than 60,000 individuals have died in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health, which does not differentiate between civilian and militant casualties. This situation has drawn accusations from various academics and officials, including those within the European Union, suggesting that Israel may be committing war crimes or even genocide.

The decision to recognize a Palestinian state sparked widespread criticisms from Israel, while nations like the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia echoed similar intentions shortly thereafter, though with caveats that reflected the complexities of the situation.
