“We can say that the vast majority of polling stations opened on time, and that shows us the vote is proceeding with complete normality and calm,” stated Davor Steir, head of the European Union (EU) observer mission. While some polling stations experienced delays due to the absence of election officials, these issues were resolved swiftly.
Currently, 120 EU election observers are monitoring the elections across Bolivia’s nine regions. They reported that election materials were distributed punctually, highlighting effective logistical management by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.
The mission’s head indicated that a comprehensive report will be released on Tuesday, detailing the pre-election phase, the campaign period, election day proceedings, and post-election follow-ups.
“In general, we have seen no major incidents regarding election day. On social media, we noticed some situations, but we will provide details on Tuesday,” added Steir during a press briefing.
Steir and deputy mission chief Ian Gray arrived in Bolivia in mid-July and have since engaged with President Luis Arce, various presidential candidates, political alliances, and representatives from journalist associations.
Polling stations across the nation opened at 8 a.m. local time (12 p.m. GMT) and will remain operational for eight hours until 4 p.m. (8 p.m. GMT). More than 7.5 million citizens are eligible to vote for the president, vice president, and members of the Legislative Assembly; an additional 369,308 citizens will participate in the voting from abroad.
