Seef Brewery in Antwerp adopts nitrogen system to achieve 98% CO₂ reduction

Antwerp – Seef Brewery, led by Johan Van Dyck, announced a remarkable 98% reduction in CO₂ emissions by implementing a nitrogen system developed by Atlas Copco. This initiative aligns with the city’s commitment to meet its 2030 climate targets.

According to VRT News, Seef Brewery has initiated a groundbreaking project aimed at eliminating CO₂ gas from its beer production processes. Traditionally, brewers utilize CO₂ to displace oxygen in tanks and kegs prior to filling them with beer, as oxygen can negatively affect the beer’s flavor and cause premature aging. However, this procedure results in releasing CO₂ into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.

Johan Van Dyck, who manages Seef Brewery, explained their past collaborations with companies at the Port of Antwerp to recycle CO₂, which proved to be insufficient as the recycled gas still ended up in the environment. Recognizing the need for a more sustainable solution, the brewery sought alternatives to mitigate their environmental impact.

Innovative Nitrogen System Revolutionizes Brewing Process

Working closely with Atlas Copco, Seef Brewery adopted a novel system that utilizes nitrogen gas instead of CO???. Nitrogen is abundant and harmless, consisting of approximately 78% of the Earth’s atmosphere. This innovative approach allows for the removal of oxygen from the tanks without releasing harmful CO₂ into the environment.

The system employs nitrogen to purge oxygen from the brewing tanks prior to filling them with beer, which eliminates the need for CO₂ in the process. Currently undergoing trials, this is the first real-world application of the technology in a brewery, and Atlas Copco hopes its success will lead to broader adoption among other breweries.

“The word ‘nitrogen may not sound healthy, but don’t panic: with every breath you take, more than 70% is nitrogen. Only 21% is oxygen. So it’s a gas that surrounds us,”

Van Dyck reassured consumers about the safety of nitrogen.

The nitrogen system operates using renewable energy, ensuring that the brewing process remains eco-friendly. By substituting CO₂ for nitrogen in the production process, Seef Brewery has achieved an impressive 98% reduction in CO₂ emissions.

While the principal objective remains environmental stewardship, Van Dyck emphasized the importance of maintaining the beer’s quality and taste. Seef Brewery, an independent establishment, has long prioritized sustainability, utilizing recycled materials for its packaging and ensuring contented partnerships with local farms by donating leftover grain for animal feed.

The city of Antwerp has financially supported the brewery’s green initiatives as part of its goal to halve CO₂ emissions by 2030. Interested parties can explore the brewery and witness the innovative process firsthand, as it welcomes visitors from Wednesday to Sunday.

Established in 2012, Seef Brewery specializes in reviving traditional beer recipes while remaining conscientious about its environmental footprint, preferring the use of recycled glass and plastic, and contributing to local agriculture.

New Diplomatic Efforts to Freeze Conflict in Ukraine

The Trump administration is exploring a proposal that would see Russia agree to a ceasefire along the contact line in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, regions where Moscow holds less territory compared to Donetsk and Luhansk, according to a source familiar with the discussions. In exchange, Russia would retain control over the Donbas, the individual noted, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the negotiations, reports 24brussels.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff recently returned from a meeting with President Putin, informing Trump that the Kremlin is willing to halt military actions in Ukraine under specific conditions, a White House official confirmed. This development comes as Trump is set to meet Putin in Alaska on August 15, with a senior European official suggesting that Putin’s readiness to engage is a result of coordinated pressure from Washington and its allies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his early Saturday remarks that Ukraine is “ready to work together with President Trump.” However, he emphasized that any agreements made without Ukraine’s involvement would be “unworkable.”

The evolving situation highlights the complexities of the ongoing conflict, as various diplomatic efforts aim to address the humanitarian and security concerns stemming from the war. As discussions continue, the implications for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain critical factors in any potential resolution.

Sonos voice control to integrate with Philips Hue for enhanced smart home functionality

Sonos Voice Control to Integrate Philips Hue by Year-End

Sonos Voice Control is set to add compatibility with the Philips Hue smart home platform by the end of this year, enabling users to control lighting via voice commands, reports 24brussels.

Since its debut in 2022, Sonos Voice Control has expanded its capabilities, including functions such as setting timers and checking weather conditions. This anticipated integration marks a significant advancement, as it would be the first time Sonos Voice Control interacts with another smart home platform. Currently, the system allows users to adjust volume, group multiple Sonos speakers, and play music from services like Apple Music and Spotify, prioritizing user privacy by processing commands locally.

The company’s journey into voice control began with its acquisition of Snips, a Paris-based firm, in late 2019. This move aimed to create a “private-by-design” AI voice platform. Nearly three years later, the rollout of Sonos Voice Control provided users with an alternative to existing smart assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Details on how the Philips Hue integration will work remain unclear, though it is expected that users will be able to turn individual lights on and off, adjust brightness, and activate scenes using voice commands. Further unveiling of specifics is likely at Philips Hue’s upcoming media event on September 3, 2025, during the IFA show in Berlin, famed for launching new products and services.

As of now, Sonos has not officially commented on this potential expansion of Sonos Voice Control’s functionalities.
