Netanyahu criticizes Starmer for ‘appeasing’ Hamas through Palestinian statehood pledge

UK to Recognize Palestinian State by September Unless Israel Acts, Starmer Says

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the United Kingdom intends to recognize a Palestinian state by September unless the Israeli government takes significant measures to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and commits to a two-state solution. “Appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails. It will fail you too. It will not happen,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation, reports 24brussels.

This announcement follows rising pressure from within Starmer’s Labour Party and an initiative from French officials advocating for Palestinian statehood. During a Cabinet meeting, Starmer indicated that “now was the right time to move this position forward,” citing the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza and the diminishing likelihood of a peace dialogue.

The Prime Minister’s statement comes as he reiterated that Hamas must release all hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attacks, disarm, and accept that they will not have any role in Gaza’s governance. This marks a pivotal change in British Middle East policy, driven by persistent lobbying from Labour MPs.

Starmer’s remarks reflect an increasingly strained diplomatic relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has earlier criticized Starmer over proposed sanctions against Israeli officials and described the UK’s suspension of certain arms exports as “shameful.”

The developments indicate a significant shift in the UK’s foreign policy direction in the region as humanitarian concerns continue to escalate. The ongoing conflict has created profound humanitarian challenges, prompting international calls for immediate action and a reassessment of existing diplomatic strategies.

In light of these circumstances, the UK’s potential recognition of a Palestinian state could have far-reaching implications for regional politics and the ongoing peace efforts. The international community is closely monitoring whether Israel will take the necessary steps to avoid further escalation.

As the situation develops, many are questioning what substantive actions can be expected from Israel and the impact of the UK’s decision on broader Middle East dynamics, particularly regarding the viability of a two-state solution.

Overall, this shift reflects a more proactive stance from the UK government in response to ongoing crises, amid calls for urgent humanitarian interventions and political resolutions.
