Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire comes into effect as opposing military chiefs to meet

Commanders from both countries to meet Tuesday morning under peace deal with cross-border committee set for next week

A truce agreement between Thailand and Cambodia came into effect in the early hours of Tuesday, testing whether it will halt the worst fighting between the neighbouring countries in more than a decade.

Both sides agreed an “unconditional” ceasefire would start at midnight on Monday to end battling over a smattering of ancient temples in disputed zones along their 800km (500-mile) border.

Palestinian Authority seeks international support force for Gaza ceasefire stabilization

Palestinian PM Calls for International Support Forces to Aid Stability in Gaza

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa announced at the United Nations on July 28, 2025, that Palestine is prepared to welcome an international Arab “support force” aimed at establishing stability and ensuring a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, reports 24brussels.

Mustafa expressed that the State of Palestine seeks to invite a stability support force via a resolution from the Security Council during the opening day of the International Conference for the Two-State Solution. This foreign mission is envisioned to assist in realizing an independent Palestinian state, coherent with international resolutions and the framework of the two-state solution.

He urged Israel to withdraw completely from Gaza and implored Hamas to surrender control and disarm, thereby facilitating a peaceful transition of power to the Palestinian Authority.

“We are cooperating with our Arab brothers and the international community to rebuild Gaza and prevent the displacement of our people from their land,” Mustafa added, underscoring collaboration with Egypt in organizing an international conference focused on the reconstruction of Gaza.

Highlighting the dire humanitarian situation, he stated that “there are all kinds of deaths; Palestinians are murdered, burned, frozen, starved, sick, sad, and afraid. And every day, every moment, for more than 20 months, they send us a cry for help to save them from this slaughter, destruction, and disregard for their lives.”

The Palestinian PM articulated the aspiration for a modern, independent, and sovereign Palestinian state that embodies the rule of law and peace, resisting occupation and violence. He proclaimed, “We want a state that is not subject to occupation, free from violence and terrorism, embracing a culture of peace.”

Since the onset of Israel’s extensive military actions in October 2023, the Gaza Strip has faced a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, over 58,000 Palestinians have perished, though independent estimates suggest the true toll, including deaths from starvation and disease, may be significantly higher.

Severe malnutrition afflicts the region, with the World Health Organization highlighting a rise in starvation-related fatalities, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children under five. Approximately 1.9 million Palestinians—roughly 85% of Gaza’s population—are internally displaced, with collapsing infrastructure driven by ongoing bombardments. Essential services like electricity, clean water, and healthcare are on the brink of failure, while hospitals are experiencing acute fuel shortages.

Aid deliveries remain critically inadequate due to persistent blockades, with over 90% of Gaza’s populace facing acute food insecurity. Economically, Gaza has incurred losses exceeding $53 billion, resulting in unemployment rates soaring to 80%, leaving many chronic health conditions untreated.

In response, Egypt and other regional Arab partners have introduced a $53 billion multi-year reconstruction initiative intended to clear debris, provide housing, and completely rehabilitate homes and infrastructure under the condition of Palestinian self-governance along with a two-state solution framework.

Bodies such as the United Nations and various humanitarian organizations assert that only a durable ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian access, and ongoing international commitment can prevent further suffering and facilitate recovery efforts in Gaza.

“Statehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward,” stated United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN conference concerning the two-state solution. He underscored that denying statehood could empower extremists globally, further complicating regional dynamics.”
