The Supreme Court has upheld a law banning TikTok in the U.S. starting Jan. 19, unless the popular social media platform cuts ties with its China-based parent company. Here’s what to know.
The decision resolves a long-running legal dispute between the Department of Justice and TikTok. But experts say President-elect Donald Trump will now have considerable sway over the platform’s future in the U.S.
The decision came a week after the justices heard a First Amendment challenge to a law aimed at the wildly popular short-form video platform used by 170 million Americans that the government fears could be influenced by the China.
TikTok, ByteDance and several users of the app sued to halt the ban, arguing it would suppress free speech for the millions of Americans who use the platform.
The Supreme Court has ruled to uphold the TikTok ban, meaning that the video app is poised to be shuttered in the U.S. this weekend.
